What the Veterans of Foreign Wars has to offer it’s members and Communities
1. Service Office:
a. The VFW was founded in 1899 to help veterans of the Spanish American and Philippine Insurrection obtain assistance from the government.
b. Our Service Office files claims and appeals for veterans at no cost to the veteran.
c. Our Service Office recovered over $85,000,000.00 in entitlements for disability claims filed by our veterans in 2008.
2. National Home for Children:
a. The National Home for Children is solely owned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
b. In 2008 we housed and cared for 89 children for those whose parents are 100% disabled, K.I.A., single parent and those parents that cannot afford to support their families.
c. Orphan children can reside at the home until they graduate from college.
3. Michigan Veterans Trust Fund:
a. The Veteran’s of Foreign Wars has two members who sit on the Board of trustee’s and they help our veterans in need. They have $50,000,000.00 that is setup in a corpus and can only use the interest they receive each year to help our fellow veterans and their families.
For example:
1. Pay their rent 2. Fix their roof of leaks 3. Putdown a new well, and etc.
4. Michigan Home for Veterans in Grand Rapids and Marquette:
a. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has two members that sit on the Board.
1. The V.F.W collects clothes, Body care items such as shampoo, deodorant & etc. 2. Raise funds for entertainment and various needs of the patients 3. We work closely with our Legislators to ensure our veterans have the proper care and their needs are met while at the Veterans Home.
b. Our Post members donate their time to assist the patient at the facilities
5. Karmanos Cancer Institution:
a. The Veterans of Foreign Wars began a program in 1983 to furnish monetary aide for cancer research and dedicated the funds to Karmanos.
b. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has donated over $1.2 million since 1983 to Karmanos.
6. National Military Service:
a. Breaks down into four categories:
1. Military Assistance Program Assist families of deployed service members with home repairs, appliance purchases, rent and other financial issues. We have paid for travel for family members to visit their loved ones in hospitals through out the world.
2. Unmet needs assists families with large expensive items
3. Operation Uplink
Provides calling cards and phone centers (cafés) to hospitalized and deployed service members
4. Adopt a unit
We provide the units with entertainment items, toiletries and other items that help the unit members during their deployment
7. Michigan Freedom Academy:
The Freedom Academy is a leadership development program for high school students with a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) or above, preparing to enter the senior year. Delegates represent a cross-section of Michigan’s leadership oriented youth. The program exposes them to a variety of issues in the area of education, business, elected government, law enforcement, drug demand regulation, national defense and basic perspectives on freedom as outlined in our Bill of Rights.
8. Hospital Programs:
The Veterans of Foreign Wars have thousands of volunteers that donate their time and money at our V.A. Hospitals in an effort to help our sick and wounded veterans. They assist with donating wheel chairs, electric scooters, walkers and other hospital equipment.
9. Voice of Democracy Program:
a. The program consists of a theme presented to our children in schools within our local community; themes such as:
“Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today Youth By”
1. The students can win awards at the Post, District, Department and National levels and have an opportunity to win the 1st prize of up to $35,000.00.
